There is just under a month left before the winter season ends - have you gotten your fill of winter fun? Building a snowman and going skiing or snowboarding are obvious choices for cold weather activities, but we've thought of a few out-of-the-box ideas that you may not have considered. While there are countless winter activities to take advantage of while it's cold out, here are five that we don't want you to miss!

Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is a fun, low-impact activity that people of all different athletic abilities can do together. It's also much less expensive to rent snowshoes and walk on a free trail, compared to a day of skiing or snowboarding on the mountain with rental equipment and a pricey lift ticket. Exploring a wintry trail on snowshoes is not only a fun way to take in the scenery but it also allows you to get closer to nature.

Ice Skating

You've likely been ice skating before in your lifetime, but for most adults it's a rare activity. This is a shame, because ice skating can be a lot of fun for kids and adults alike. It's also a great date night activity for couples. Ice skating is a great option for those who live in warmer states to enjoy the winter season - even places like Southern California have ice skating rinks to visit.

Visiting a Mountain Lodge

For anything from a weeks-long trip to a one-night stay, a mountain lodge is a great option for a winter getaway. Cozy and rustic, these vacation spots have a way of making you feel right at home. If a big lodge on a popular skiing mountain isn't your style, check sites like Airbnb and Vacasa for smaller cabins in more remote areas. There may be great opportunities to rent a house that feels more intimate and authentic.

Homemade Hot Chocolate

You can't let the winter season go by without enjoying some hot chocolate - and the best way to drink it is when it's homemade! An added perk with homemade hot chocolate? You can add whatever toppings you want - marshmallows, toffee, cookies -  it's all up to your imagination.

Here's a simple and delicious recipe to follow, via Honest and Tasty:

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 2 heaping tsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt

INSTRUCTIONS

Heat up milk in a microwave safe cup/mug until hot. Alternatively, heat up milk in a small saucepan over med-low heat until it's hot (take caution that it doesn't boil over). Mix in the sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. If there are little lumps of the cocoa that haven't fully dissolved, use the back of your spoon against the side of cup to crush them in. Enjoy!

Snowmobiling

A snowmobile may seem intimidating at first, but with a bit of practice snowmobiling is a fun and safe winter activity that will get your adrenaline going! Similar to a personal watercraft, learning how to operate a snowmobile is fairly easy. Although this can be a more expensive activity, snowmobiling is a thrilling adventure that takes you on a journey to explore the mountain.

Even if you don't have enough time for March 21st to check all of these off your list, fill up your remaining winter weekends with fun things to do and put the rest on your bucket list for next year. It may be chilly out, but winter is a great season to enjoy!
