We've spoken before on this blog about the idea of a leader versus a boss, specifically in this blog post from May.  Today we are going to re-emphasize that important point. As a dealership manager, you should strive to lead your team and encourage them with positivity. Being a leader will prove much more effective in the long run than simply bossing your team around.

While bosses tend to direct and control their teams without asking for or giving feedback, leaders work with their teams and come together on decision making. Even though a manager may have different incentives and a higher level of responsibility to see things through, he and his team are still working toward mutual goals.

A good dealership leader gives his team members a chance to speak up, and he welcomes their opinions and ideas when presented with problems or circumstances that are in need of attention. It is proven that employees who feel involved in decision-making processes take more responsibility and are more productive.

While some employees may be more vocal than others, a leader proactively attempts to collect feedback or thoughts even from those team members who do not speak up on their own. A boss may simply brush that employee aside and assume that they are no help, but a leader empowers his team be confident in their ideas and input.

During dealership problem-solving meetings 'whether they are daily, weekly, or otherwise 'leaders should encourage brainstorming sessions with their teams and help the group come to a consensus on the best solution or outcome for the situation they are facing. Each idea should be fairly considered, then prioritized in terms of best solutions and realistic expectations. Once a solution or idea has been selected, the group should make a plan together to take action.

Just like we talked about in our  previous post , employees who are managed well are given specific goals to achieve, a timeline to meet, and individual responsibilities assigned. There should be a method of measuring employees' progress in completing those tasks. All of this should be included in the overall plan that is made with the leader and his team.

Don't underestimate the value of your employees' feedback 'you hired them for a reason, so let them show you that you made the right decision! You may be surprised to hear a different perspective that you'd never considered before. Empower your dealership employees, welcome and encourage their ideas and opinions, and be the best leader that you can.
